getting to know the graduates
Graduating Student: Matthew Gernt (S 21)
My process paper reflects on place, colonialism, observation, how we consume images, and how they act as avatars of ideology. My grad exhibition work touches on a lot of concepts stated above through moving image, sound, voice-over narration, still image, and text.
Who, or what is your work in conversation with?
How did VCFA change your approach to thinking about your studio practice and your community at home?
I now see my work being part of an ongoing conversation. The program helped me to go deeper into a practice rooted in conceptual/theoretical discourse and engagement with social, political issues concerning society. I see a lot of these issues playing out in my own community. I feel I understand and know my community better. I see that I am an active participant within my community and my contribution matters.
What was on your play list during your time at VCFA?
Who are your favorite protagonists in fiction?
I always liked Gervaise from L’Assommoir by Emile Zola
What is your favorite bird?
